Beach Trip

We had talked about a trip down to the beach to do some shooting. The dates we were talking about was Nov 2nd or the 16th. It turns out Nov 2nd would be best for me. I have a wedding on the 15th and a family event on the 16th. It's getting dark around 6:00 PM now and I think time changes this weekend so that means it will be getting dark around 5:00 PM. I'd like to keep it a little simpler. Rather than getting someone to go along with us so we can take their photos we can do it ourselves or find someone on the beach that would like to have their picture taken. I want to spend some time on landscape photos as well. So let me know if you are interested in going and if that date and time would be OK.

Quick Picasa Video

This is a clip I dumped into the free Picasa software mentioned in the post below. It took less than five minutes to make the video and synch it to one of my favorite songs..

Free Foto Processing Software

For the past two years, I have been using Google's free Picasa software. Two weeks ago they released their latest version 3.0. This works only on computers using Windows operating systems. It can be downloaded for free at:

http://picasa.google.com/#utm_source=en-all-more&utm_campaign=en-pic&utm_medium=et

The reasons I like Picassa are:

First, it's absolutely free - but I hear that in six months they'll start charging for it. It's simple to use, handles cropping, red-eye removal, blemish removal, lighting changes, special effects - all the simple things that make photos better - and without any training. It organizes all the pictures on your computer the first time you launch the program. It makes e-mail pictures very simple - and automatically converts a 2 mb picture to an 80k picture when you e-mail them. It automatically looks for cameras and disks, etc, to import pictures directly into your computer - and lets you name them into an identifible folder for later use. Finally, preserves a copy of your picture that you can always recover.

I recommend you give it a try if you want simple foto management for your Windows computers. Please give us your feedback so everyone will know your experience.

A few more photos

Here are a few more photos from UCR. I learned a lot, and it's nice to apply those things in photos. I think I have a deeper appreciation of nature's beauty.

UCR's Botanical Gardens

Although I was disappointed in the pictures I took - I learned a great deal and am planning to return to UCR soon. My thanks to Bob (and everyone) for their tips - and patience.

Need Help Posting Your Pictures Here??

Some of us are new to blogging so Bob asked if I would write up some directions on how to post your pictures. We all want to see each other's work.

If you are reading this post then you are already on the GroveFoto Blog. Look up in the top right corner of the screen and you should see "Sign In". Click there. The screen will change to the sign in page for Blogger. Don't worry, you haven't lost the GroveFoto blog, we'll get back to it later. Towards the top of the screen, next to Blogger's Logo, you should see two white boxes. In the first one, type your user name (email address). In the second box, type in your password. (if you do not have a password set up yet, you need to go back to your emailed invite from the blog to be an author. Follow the instructions and it will walk you through the steps to setting up your account and password). Now click your mouse on the blue box, "Sign In", it's right below the user name box. Blogger should bring up a page that will list all of your blogs hosted by it. Find "GroveFoto" and just below it should be a big blue box that says "New Post". Click on it and up will come a new post page that's ready for you to start writing in.

Click your mouse in the "Title" box and type in the title for your post. Then click your mouse in the larger box below the "Title" box. Anything typed in this box will be your actual post.

To add your pictures, click your mouse on the little box that looks like land and sky, located right next to the "ABC" spell check in the menu header of the post box (tan shaded area). A new window will pop up that will allow you to browse your own pictures from your computer. Be sure to use the left side of the window, under the title, "Add An Image From Your Computer". If you have more than one picture to upload (we know you do!), click on the blue colored "Add Another Image". You can click on it several times, with a total of 5 uploads at a time. Click "Browse" at the end of each empty box and your c drive contents should pop up. Find your way to your pictures and simply double-click on the picture you want to upload (add) to your post. This should automatically fill in it's location in the once-empty box image box in the upload window. When you've added up to five photos, one in each box, click the orange box, "Upload Image". This may take awhile but once it's done, a window will pop up that shows all of your added photos. Click on "Add Images" to actually place them in your post. If you have more photos to add, simply repeat the same steps.

You can move your photos in the post by holding down a click from your mouse on a photo and slowly dragging it up or down, depending on where you want it. When you have it in the spot you want, simply release the the mouse button.

Blogger automatically saves your post every few minutes. But to be sure you don't lose anything, click on the blue "Save Now" button every so often.

At the bottom of the post box, there is an empty box that to the right of it says, "Labels for this post:". Type your name in this box. That way, Blogger can sort our posts by name if asked to.

When you are all done, there is a blue "Preview" at the top right corner of the post box. If you click on that, it will let you view how your post will look before you actually publish it. To return to your post without publishing it, look in the same location as the blue "Preview" and it should say "Hide Preview" now. Click that and it will bring you back to where you were.

Ready to publish? Click on the orange box "Publish Post" and you'll release your masterpieces to the blog for all of us to enjoy.

If you have any questions or problems, feel free to email me jennywoodall@yahoo.com and I'll do my best to help. Need me to walk you through it? Feel free to call: 951-662-0524.

Happy posting everyone.

Trunk & Treat at The Grove

I was asked to take photos again for the Grove's Trunk & Treat event on Oct 31 year. I got thinking it might be a good opportunity for some of you to practice your dusk and night time photography.  I asked Kerry, who is in charge of the children's ministry for the Grove, if it would be OK if some of those attending the Grove photography class would be able to come and shoot as well.  Kerry thought it was a great idea.  So I am sending out the invitation to all of you.  If you are unfamiliar with the Trunk and Treat events at the Grove, click Here for additional info. Trunk and Treat is one very big event and would like to get as many photos as possible.  If your interested, please let me know.

Thanks

Bob

UCR's Botanical Gardens Shoot

First, I want to Thank Allison and Jessy for coming by and letting all these crazy photographers shoot away. You're both beautiful and patient.

What a turn out. I hope each of you got something out of our two and a half hours together. Went by quick. I would like everyone to share some of their photos along with comments, what you learned and what you would have done differently. To become a better photographer you must shoot, look and learn from your mistakes. Most importantly, be open for comments and suggestions, good or bad. You have to be thick skinned to be a photographer. Getting someone else's perspective is very important. Trying different things and see what works and what doesn't.

Please post your photos. I will send out invitations to everyone so you can post directly on our blog. I want you to at least try to post before emailing me and asking how to do it. This is what this class is about, trying new things. Well, here are a couple of mine. I hope to see others posting soon.

This Sunday's Class and trip to UCR update....

Just an update. Next Sunday, Oct 5th we will be having our Photography 101 class at 9:00 AM. We will be discussing some of the things we will be using over at UCR for those attending.

At 2:00 PM, everyone wanting to go over to the Botanical Gardens at UCR can meet at the Grove. We will be meeting near the main doors on the same side of the building as our class. Karen's husband has offered to drive one of the Grove vans over to UCR. I'm planning on staying there until around 5:00 PM which is when they close. I have a map attached for anyone wishing to drive over there themselves. Make sure you bring your camera if you have one, charged battery, flash card, manual and any questions you may have. If you have any questions before hand, give me a call or e-mail.
